Parkinson's Awareness Month

4/5/2023

Parkinson's Awareness Month
Every 6 minutes someone is diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease.

April is Parkinson's Awareness Month, a chronic and progressive disease that affects more than a million people in the United States and over 10 million across the world.

Parkinson’s Disease is a movement disorder that affects one’s ability to perform daily tasks. Most commonly, Parkinson’s is recognized through the regression of motor skills due to tremors and stiffness in the muscles.

Medication plays a big role in managing Parkinsons for many who are diagnosed. There are some different lifestyle changes, therapies, and exercises one can utilize to improve life with Parkinson’s alongside medications.
Massage therapy can help temporarily reduce tremors and relax rigid muscles. Massage  increases blood flow and promotes overall relaxation, it has also been shown to reduce pain and fatigue.

Staying active is one of the most recommended ways to retain mobility and stability for those with Parkinson’s. Slow moving, low impact exercises such as Tai Chi or Yoga are some of the best activities to improve symptoms.

These exercises increase balance, coordination, flexibility, and mobility. Staying active also helps to improve overall mood, decrease stress, and even help create better sleep.

Melody Living’s partnership with Paxxon offers residents on-site occupational, physical, and speech therapies with personalized programming to enhance quality of life for residents with Parkinson’s.
