How to Prevent UTIs in Seniors

5/7/2019

How to Prevent UTIs in Seniors
Above: UTI prevention in seniors is important for all in our assisted living and memory support community.
Urinary Tract Infections also more commonly referred to as UTIs can occur at any age. However, it’s important to make sure that if you or a loved one suspects they may have a UTI that they get it treated promptly to avoid further complications. We also recommend taking necessary precautions to prevent UTIs altogether. Here’s what you need to know.
UTI Symptoms in Seniors
As we age it becomes increasingly difficult to diagnose UTIs. Therefore, prevention is key. However, some of the most common warning signs include:
  • Cloudy or bloody urine
  • Strong or foul-smelling urine
  • Increase in the need to urinate
  • Pain or burning while urinating
  • Pressure in the lower pelvis
  • For seniors living with dementia warning signs might include sudden irritability, confusion or unexplained agitation

Treatment for UTIs in Seniors
The condition must be diagnosed and treated by a licensed healthcare professional which most often includes prescribed antibiotics.

UTI Prevention in Seniors
For seniors, prevention is so important especially if they are living with dementia as it’s harder to detect symptoms.
  • Avoid douches or other feminine hygiene products
  • Drink plenty of water and limit alcohol and caffeine consumption
  • Incorporate 100% cranberry juice or cranberry supplements into your diet
(only if you don’t have a history of kidney stones)
  • Keep your undergarments clean and change them regularly
  • Wipe front to back
  • Avoid holding your urine for long periods of time

If you suspect you or your loved one might be experiencing symptoms of a UTI, inform your primary care physician or caregiver right way. To learn more about us or to learn more about our 24/7 onsite nursing assistance, give us a call at 719.960.4005.
