We love getting to know each of our residents here at Melody Living in Colorado Springs, this month, we invite you to get to know Arlene Hansen, Melody Living’s assisted living featured resident of September! We hope you enjoy getting to know more about Arlene as much as we do. Arlene Hansen was born and grew up in Brooklyn, New York. She attended Fort Hamilton High School. From Brooklyn, she moved to upstate New York in her twenties. She started work straight out of high school at only 17 years old as a secretary and moved up to executive secretary as she advanced in her career. Throughout her life, she worked at multiple hospitals, including St. Francis and Eisenhower Osteopathic Hospital. Arlene and her husband, Ron, grew up on the same block together when they were kids. They became friends at ages 11 and 13, Ron being two years older. Arlene says she always was fond of Ron because he would take his sister on trips to the ice cream shop. It wasn’t until they were out of high school that they started dating though. Four years later, they were married in Brooklyn! Ron worked for Civil Services with the Air Force when they lived in New York. The couple moved to Colorado in the 1970s due to the closure of the Air Force Base that Ron worked at and they have lived in Colorado ever since. Arlene has 2 daughters who both live nearby in Colorado Springs, Jean and Joanne. Jean has two kids of her own, Jordan and Jared, and one grandchild named Jackson. Joanne has two children as well, Dane and Olivia. Since retiring, Arlene and Ron have traveled to many places including Arizona, where they would spend winters in their RV camper. They road-tripped with the RV all over the country. Her favorite places she has traveled are Argentina and Canada. A pivotal moment in history that had an impact on Arlene was the assassination of JFK. A few years before, JFK was visiting Arlene’s hometown, where she got to shake his hand. Arlene’s favorite holidays are Thanksgiving and Christmas. She shared that she had a tradition of cooking her famous homemade Lasagna recipe. Her grandson is now keeping the tradition alive by baking it each year for the family. Throughout her life, Arlene was also an avid quilter and still has many of her works of quilting art. Arlene’s favorite thing about the Melody Living community is the people she has met and the relationships she has built with the other residents and staff members. If she could give a piece of advice to others, Arlene would say “Make the best of any situation if you can. Some days it’s easier than others.”
