Meet Bonnie Bailey Hall, Melody Living’s Colorado Springs independent living resident of the month! We love getting to know each of our residents here at Melody Living and we hope you enjoy getting to know more about Bonnie as our featured resident. Bonnie was born in 1933 in Broaddus, Texas, where she was raised. Bonnie left for college in 1951 at the age of 18 when she attended Centenary College in Shreveport, LA. Her first job was working for Equitable Life Assurance Society, where she worked for 3 years. She then became a flight attendant for Eastern Airlines until 1957, when she married her husband, Dan Hall. Back in the day, once a female airline attendant was married, they could no longer be an attendant. Her husband worked as a flight engineer and much preferred Boeing 727 and 747 jets. They moved to Germany in 1966 where they lived for two years before moving to Japan for the next 7 years. While living in Japan, Bonnie taught Kindergarten while taking Japanese language classes. Bonnie and Dan came back to the States in 1975, where she then began working at Pacific Telephone Company which eventually would become AT&T. She retired as a Manager in Operator Services after 28 years. Her favorite travel destination was Vienna and Salzburg, Austria. They were living in Germany at the time and would travel all over Europe often. When the movie ‘Sound of Music’ was released, Bonnie took her boys to Austria to learn about where the movie was filmed and to see key places from the movie. However, Bonnie’s favorite place she has lived was Tokyo. Bonnie beams with pride when she speaks of her family, and she quickly admitted her greatest accomplishment is her family. Family is everything to Bonnie. Her husband Dan passed in 1996, and she misses him dearly. They were married for 39 years. There were many pivotal moments in history throughout Bonnie’s life. The most memorable was the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Bonnie’s family had a radio by which to listen to important speeches by the president, and that year FDR gave his famous “Day of Infamy” speech. All of the neighbors came to Bonnie’s home to hear the speech. She was 8 years old and remembers the speech vividly. Bonnie is a lover of history and learning and it is quite apparent when you talk to her. She remembers so many facts, she is the Trivia Queen and loves Jeopardy! Her favorite Holiday is Memorial Day and Bonnie enjoys gardening and reading, biographies are her genre of choice right now, but she reads everything. Bonnie also leads the Melody Living Gardening Club. Bonnie chose Melody Living in Colorado Springs because she wanted to move closer to her oldest son who lives in Colorado Springs. She was living in Arizona previously and her two requests were that her new home be bright and airy, and that it not smell institutional. Bonnie’s son, Ben, knew when he visited Melody Living independent living that this was exactly what Bonnie wanted. She is thrilled to live here in our thriving community, and she is very happy with his choice. Bonnie loves all of the activities, especially Gardening Club and Trivia, as well as the constant encouragement from the staff. Bonnie’s advice to others is to “grow old with an open mind.” We invite you to discover a Life in Harmony™ like Bonnie has with Melody Living independent living in Colorado Springs.
